FIRE HELMET -- The leather fire helmet has changed little since the early 1800s. Reinforced ribs provide strength to the crown. An ornately painted shield on the front identifies the rank and fire company of the wearer, while the wide rear brim protects their neck from water and hot embers.

RED SHIRT -- In the summer of 1840, members of New York City's Protection Engine Co. No. 5 adopted a flaming-red woolen shirt as part of their uniform. The new shirts caused a storm of envy and admiration. Within ten years the red shirt had become part of the stardard uniform for an American firefighter.
