SPEAKING TRUMPET -- Twenty to sixty individuals were needed to operate the hand-pumped fire engines of the mid 1800s. To direct and coordinate this large amount of manpower, fire company "foremen" and other chief officers used megaphones or speaking trumpets. Soon the trumpet quickly became a symbol of rank and authority.
