September - 2011
9 • Special exhibit “Ground Level: September 11-14” opens at the Aurora Regional Fire Museum. Originally produced in 2001, and on loan from Aurora Public Art Commission, this exhibit features more than a dozen images of the World Trade Center taken during and shortly after the September 11th attack. This exhibit runs though October 1st.
11 • “Aurora Pauses to Remember” the City of Aurora marks the 10th anniversary of 9/11 terrorist attacks with a remembrance ceremony that will honor families who lost loved ones and salute the bravery of emergency responders during the tragedy • The 9/11 commemoration ceremony will be held at 10:00am, at Aurora’s Central Fire Station, 75 N. Broadway Ave.
24 • Smithsonian's National Museum Day • The Aurora Regional Fire Museum will join museums and cultural institutions nationwide in opening their doors free of charge on Saturday September 24, 2010 for the Smithsonian Magazine’s seventh annual Museum Day. • Visit the Smithsonian Museum Day Website for more details and to download your FREE Museum Day ticket. • The Aurora Regional Fire Museum is open 1 to 4pm.

4 • Firefighter Dayna and Tango the Fire Safety Dog • Children will delight in singing along with Firefighter Dayna as they learn about recognizing the sound and importance of smoke alarms as well as making and having an escape map. Children will also learn how often to practice home exit drills and watch as Tango demonstrates crawling low under the smoke. • The event is hosted by the Aurora Regional Fire Museum, in cooperation with the Aurora Fire Department, and sponsored by First Alert and the Keep Kids Fire Safe Foundation. Doors open at 6:30pm, program begins at 7:00. This event is FREE - but seating is limited, and tickets are required.

8 • The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 Presentation • David Lewis, Curator of the Aurora Regional Fire Museum, will present a lively forty-five minute discussion/multi-media presentation on the history of the Great Chicago Fire. Following the program the audience will have an opportunity to see artifacts that survived the Great Chicago Fire and get a sneak peek at the museum's new proposed Chicago Fire exhbit. Doors open at 1:00pm, program begins at 2:00. • This event is FREE with your admission to the Aurora Regional Fire Museum - but seating is limited, and tickets are required. 20 • Evening lecture, “Fire Zouaves: Firemen in the Civil War Infantry” • Learn how the volunteer firefighters of New York City were recruited and joined the Civil War en-mass to form two infantry regiments - know as the 1st and 2nd New York Fire Zouave Regiments. These firefighters were recruited by Colonel Elmer Ellsworth, a long time Illinois resident and friend of Lincoln's. When faced with the challenge of organizing a regiment, Ellsworth responded, "I want the New York Firemen, for there are no more effective men in the country, and none with whom I can do so much.” • Presented at the Aurora Regional Fire Museum, and in partnership with local libraries, as part of the Fox Valley Reads program • Doors open at 6:30pm, discussion begins at 7:00 This event is FREE - but seating is limited, and reservations are required.

17 • Celebrate Family Reading Night at the Aurora Regional Fire Museum, join us for an evening of stories and activities hosted by the Aurora Public Library. For children ages five and up. The event is FREE, but reservations on the Aurora Public Library's Website is requested • Doors to the Aurora Regional Fire Museum open at 5:30pm
22 • Last day to deliver entries into the Gingerbread Firehouse contest to the Aurora Regional Fire Museum

26 • Third annual Gingerbread Firehouse Contest and Holiday Open House at the Aurora Regional Fire Museum • Open 1 to 4pm. Gingerbread contest winners announced at 3:30pm
