The Onion is near . . . The Onion is near !

On Thursday, June 20, after generations of absence and many years of hoping and dreaming, a newly replicated "onion-dome" will be hefted into place on top of the Aurora Regional Fire Museum's old Central Fire Station.

Manufactured by Campbellsville Industries in Campbellsville, Kentucky, the onion dome will be shipped to Aurora in several pieces. Assembly will begin Thursday morning when the dome's eight wedged shaped sections are attached around a central core. By early afternoon, the completed octagonal shaped dome should be ready for lifting and placement on top of the old Central Fire Station.

While the ARFM's renovation has dragged on far longer than anticipated, we are pleased to report work is back on track and slow, steady progress is being made. The onion dome is the figural (and literal) crown for the building's distinctive front facade. Three bay-windows and a large decorative cornice will be installed in coming weeks. As the project nears an end, the two overhead apparatus bay doors will be replaced by historically accurate recreations of the building's original wood "swing" doors.

You are invited to join us on Thursday, June 20, to watch this momentous occasion. While we anticipate the dome to be placed on the building early in the afternoon, keep in mind construction schedules are unpredictable, and as the old saying goes, "progress waits for no one...." If you do plan on joining us, please be watchful for construction traffic on Broadway, and use in the City of Aurora parking lot -- across the street from the Aurora Fire Headquarters and the ARFM
